Sustainable Development Goals to which Quantum Technology can Contribute

Enabling the Societal Impact of Quantum Technology

to which Quantum Technology can Contribute

How can quantum technology contribute to society? In alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which encompass global aspirations, we have launched the SDQs (Sustainable Development goals to which Quantum technology can contribute) initiative. Our objective is to shift from current “quantum technology research and development” to “using quantum technology for social impact.” We aim to foster an environment that facilitates quantum technology adoption across various industries and accelerates its progress towards meaningful contributions to society.

Why now?

Why now?

Founded in Tokyo in 2020, QPARC has successfully gathered over 50 global companies into a community, providing each company with the opportunity to learn and gain practical experience to prepare for the quantum age.

Taking the next step forward, we aim to collaborate with you to determine “what we can do now” to comprehend and use the unique capabilities of quantum computers. Our goal is to push the boundaries, transitioning from conceptualization to actualization, and create novel products and services that address societal challenges.

The SDQs aim to address the concerns of both the “interested” and “management” groups by advancing quantum technology initiatives towards the creation of products and services that solve social problems. Our mission is to expedite the research, development, and practical application of quantum technology.

Our approach

Case Study: Develpoing Sustainable Hydrogen Fuels

ENEOS, engaged in the development of sustainable hydrogen fuels, initiated research on catalysts based on vibrational analysis of molecules to investigate the production and transportation of hydrogen fuels. The vibrational analysis in the transition state of a chemical reaction necessitates the consideration of electron correlations (interactions between electrons), demanding substantial computing power on classical computers.

To achieve vibrational analysis with high accuracy and realistic time scales, while accounting for quantum mechanical effects such as electron correlation, ENEOS collaborated with QunaSys to devise a quantum algorithm for vibrational analysis on a quantum computer. Demonstrating the effectiveness of the algorithm, they executed it on a Honeywell Quantum Solutions (now Quantinuum) ion-trap quantum computer via Microsoft Azure Quantum, yielding results in agreement with classical computer simulations. The calculations were successfully performed, validating the feasibility of vibrational analysis on a quantum computer, even starting with small molecules.

This study highlights the significant benefits of employing quantum algorithms for our research.
